How to Cultivate a Meaningful Life
Have you, dear reader, given much thought to what would make your life meaningful?
Many of us wish that a life of meaning would materialise out of the blue. When it inevitably doesn't fall into our laps, we are disappointed. Meaning isn't something we stumble onto while sleepwalking through our lives. Instead, it's a state that needs cultivation.
Understanding Ourselves
We can only cultivate a life of substance if we firmly grasp who we are. We embark on self-discovery by reflecting on our thoughts, actions and motivations through journalling and meditation while recognising our habitual behaviours by being mindful of what we do. It's about opening ourselves to new experiences, exploring our interests, and dedicating time to pursuits that fan the flames of our curiosity.
Choosing Our Path
Then, armed with an understanding of who we are, we're ready to make a consequential decision: who do we aspire to be?
Life is too precious (and short) to squander it, living a half-life. We need to define the kind of person we want to embody clearly, and then we need to be that person. We acquire the necessary knowledge through reading books or taking relevant courses. We cultivate essential habits, such as daily exercise and a healthy diet. We show up every day.
Taking Responsibility
We don't postpone life until tomorrow; tomorrow may not come. Though Fate inevitably hurls obstacles and temptations in our path, it's in our power to choose how we respond. We may not command Fate, but we can steer ourselves. We must face ourselves in the mirror and accept full responsibility for our decisions and their consequences.
Happiness is dependent on self-discipline. We are the biggest obstacles to our own happiness. It is much easier to do battle with society and with others than to fight our own nature." - Dennis Prager.
Aligning with Authenticity
Living a life rich with meaning requires alignment with our authentic selves - the selves we yearn to be and can be right now if we choose. Every day, we decide who we present to the world: the shadow of our potential, or the blazing light of our alignment.
So, decide who you want to be, dear reader. Decide, and show up every day.
Until next week,
Ric.
